SPD

SPD is the abbreviation for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics. It is a clipless pedals system invented by Shimano in 1988 that makes waking possible with cycling shoes, by allowing the cleats to be fitted in a recess of the soles.
Shimano makes a number of different SPD cleats, and not all cleats are compatible with all pedals, especially between “road” and “mountain” SPD product lines. Also, some can only be released from the pedal by twisting the heel outwards, while others can also be released by twisting the heel inwards.
Using a small allen key, the strength of heel twist to release can be adjusted, so beginners can have it ’soft’ and easy to get out, and then tighten it up as they progress.
