Ivan Basso is making a comeback. Basso was one of the favorites until he was banned from the professional cycling scene for attempted doping. The ban would end come 24th October 2008.
Basso is expected to begin racing with Liquigas team at the upcoming 2008 Japan Cup, a one day cycling event held every October in Japan. Although his 2009 racing schedule has yet to be confirmed, he should be aiming for the 2009 Giro d’Italia, which he won first place in 2006.
Basso’s comeback is a rather controversial one. Many cyclists caught for doping during the Operación Puerto doping incident have seen their careers end. He is able to make a comeback today mainly due to his admission of his doping intentions, while insisting that he never actually did so. Many call him a hero for doing so, and others despise him for even having the intentions.
Basso’s website, http://www.ivanbasso.it/, now has a countdown timer to 1st November 2008, with the words “al nuovo sito…e non solo,” which means “A new site…and he’s not alone.”
